Small changes can have maximum impact, and few decor pieces have a better effort-to-wow-factor ratio than a large and beautiful rug.

I should add a caveat, though: You'll have a better chance at low effort and stress if you shop at newer, online shops like Revival Rugs. Unlike traditional home stores, where you may have to contend with mind-boggling prices, lack of transparency about how and where the rugs are made, and inconvenient delivery methods, Revival Rugs makes rug shopping more accessible, clear, and enjoyable.

This is not my living room, but you can see the rug's impact on the space. Revival Rugs

Revival sells new, handwoven rugs and curates unique, vintage rugs, all online. The former is created in partnership with artisans from northern India, while the latter is sourced from Turkey and Morocco. Part of the company was founded in Istanbul, Turkey, where the team can develop direct relationships with local craftspeople.

These relationships let Revival ensure quality and relay any tastes, preferences, and expectations of customers in the US. "We have a faster feedback loop with artisans to customize products in response to customer demand (i.e., larger size rugs, runners, colors — neutrals like champagne and soft pink tones)," cofounder Ben Hyman told Insider Reviews.

The bootstrapped company has seen great success in the last few years, growing revenue from $1.5 million in 2018 to $4.2 million in 2019, it told Insider Reviews.

My Moroccan vintage rug arrived folded in a box that was easy to carry and without any deep creases

Revival sent me a rug from its Moroccan vintage rug collection, which is a newer launch and has slightly different qualities than the Turkish vintage rug collection.

While the Turkish rugs are characterized by their complex patterns and tight weaves, Moroccan rugs may have more abstract designs and feel plusher. Whichever style you prefer, know that there's only one available of each specific rug on the site — and you won't find these one-of-a-kind vintage rugs anywhere else.

My 69-inch by 125-inch rug ($815) was delivered safely to my door in a cardboard box, which has easy-carry side handles.

The rug was folded up inside but didn't seem to have any noticeable or deep creases once I took it out. Revival says it folds rather than rolls up its rugs to make packaging cheaper and less bulky, allowing the company to offer free shipping on its rugs. Once unfolded, your rug should flatten out naturally within a few days.

With the help of my roommates, I arranged the rug on our living room floor (the first picture above). The rug immediately changed the feel of our room, making it feel bigger and look more interesting with the colorful details and handmade construction.

It was soft and felt durable, like it would last for years with the proper care

The rug is made from 100% wool and felt nice and soft under my feet. It also felt strong and durable, like a rug that would last for years.

Since I put mine under some furniture, it didn't slip and slide. But if you're experiencing slippage, Insider Reviews executive editor Ellen Hoffman recommends getting a rug pad like this one to secure the rug. Rug pads also have the benefit of adding comfortable and supportive cushioning.

The brand includes styling tips and details about each rug's origins so you can appreciate what goes into making each rug

On each product page, you can find details about the rug's region of origin, how it was dyed (if at all), explanations behind its design motifs, and styling tips. You can also get a free design consultation if you're having trouble deciding which rug to get.

In the site's FAQs, there's step-by-step information about how the rugs are made, so you know exactly what your money is going to. You're not left in the dark about the manufacturing process, and you can appreciate why your rug is going to be a worthy investment.

This extra knowledge made me want to care for it more than a cheaper purchase from a big-box store. Not only did the rug physically feel like a luxurious item, but I also learned why exactly it had that feeling. I've been careful not to take the decor piece for granted and follow Revival's helpful tips for cleaning the rug. These include shaking it out, vacuuming it with a suction attachment, and changing the direction of the rug once in a while to ensure it's getting even foot traffic.

Also not my living room, but another great example of how a rug can add color and liveliness to your space. Revival Rugs

With prices ranging from $200 to $5,000 depending on the size, the rugs are by no means cheap, but they are more affordable than rugs of comparable quality, durability, and origins. I looked at Moroccan rugs from independent purveyors, and on average, Revival's were about $200 to $300 cheaper than these competitors.

The convenience of free shipping on rugs over $50 and thoughtfully designed packaging also can't be understated. If you don't love your rug, you can return it within seven days for a refund minus a fee of $20 per rug.

There's no other way around it — if you want a vintage rug, you should be prepared to spend some money. However, you should also feel like the price is justified and doesn't break your entire home improvement budget. Revival Rugs lifts the veil off the vintage rug industry and provides an always expanding collection of beautifully crafted options. I love how my Moroccan rug looks and also came out of this with a better appreciation for how it was made.
